Splintered Stone

by Nick Gisburne

When they found the last pretender to the kingdom’s broken throne
When they sent their starving dogs to flush her out
She was sitting without worry, in a ring of splintered stone
To the superstitious hunters
All devout
She was evil
There was never any doubt

Was it magic?
Was it fear?
They believed such things could make them disappear

When they tried to force their hounds inside the circle of her seat
They were set upon and savaged by their beasts
Though they fought them off and killed them they would not admit defeat
In their number was a tall, disfigured priest
Who was certain that her spell could be released

As he chanted
As he spoke
She was silent as a twisting strand of smoke

As the priest began to shake
As his book began to burn
In the circle of her sorcery
The stones began to turn

When they found the last pretender to the kingdom’s broken throne
They expected nothing more than just a girl
But her blood was born eternal, and the splinters of her stone
Swarmed around her in a slow, hypnotic swirl
As her crimson-painted lips began to curl

With a whisper
With a word
They were crushed before their horror could be heard

When they kneel before the princess on their kingdom’s broken throne
When they worship what they cannot understand
When they beg to kiss the fingers of her hand
When they bow before the power they are shown
She rules within a ring of splintered stone
Alone
