A Witch Awaits

by Nick Gisburne

They take another photograph
A picture of her pain
To prove she isn’t burned beyond repair
They say they see the damage
But inside her spreads a stain
A negative she knew was always there

Her body is a serviceable shell
But inside her is a mind that binds and blinds her
In the prison of an antiseptic cell
In the shadows of a cold, hypnotic hell
A witch awaits

Unsatisfied, insisting on a new, intrusive test
The surgeon pulls a scanner from his coat
But when he tries to prise apart the panels of her chest
She wraps her metal fingers round his throat

His mindless violation
Stirs a primitive vibration
She is more than just a dutiful machine
She is more than any man has ever seen

Her body is a serviceable shell
But inside her is a mind that binds and blinds her
In the prison of an antiseptic cell
In the shadows of a cold, hypnotic hell
A witch awaits

Delivering her fury and frustration, eye to eye
She kills the man who tried to make her whole
As the others shock her senses, as her circuits slowly die
There is silence in the sickness of her soul

They put her in a stark, metallic, artificial form
Believing that their tools can tame the storm

Her body is a perfect, pristine shell
But inside her is a mind that binds and blinds her
In the prison of an antiseptic cell
In the shadows of a cold, hypnotic hell
Though they tried to make her twisted spirit whole
They will never save or sanitise her soul

A nightmare not predicted by the Fates
A woman who will burn the world she hates

She imagines what they paid for her
In the metal skin they made for her

A witch awaits
