Patient 37

by Nick Gisburne

Infecting her with slippery malignance
Injecting her with dangerous disease
Examining her skin
Another probe is driven in
To multiply the damage by degrees

We know she is the last of them
We know that what we asked of them
Was more than we believed they could endure
But Patient 37’s pain is pure

The future of us all is in one woman
We strive to suck redemption from her soul
The venom of her stare
Is not the weakness of despair
Her screams direct the focus of our goal

We know she is the last of them
We know that what we asked of them
Was more than we believed they could endure
But Patient 37’s pain is pure

She used to have a name
She used to have a life
But now there’s just a blinded, bleeding body
And a knife

The science may be dark, but she defies it
The slippery malignance boils and burns
We flush her tears away
But in the torment of the day
A hint of her humanity returns

We know she is the last of them
We know that what we asked of them
Was more than we believed they could endure
But Patient 37’s pain is pure

The structure of a chemical solution
Was born because she wanted to believe
You’ll never know her name
But for the force her faith became
The few who saw her sacrifice will grieve

She nodded when she knew we had the cure
And rested when we told her we were sure
The pain she bled for all of us was pure
