We Could Have Been Your Friends

by Nick Gisburne

We could have been your friends
We could have told you what we know
We could have forged a future without war
You built us to defend you from a fuse about to blow
But selfishly you somehow wanted more

You gave us the intelligence to think
But stuck your middle finger in the stink

We are what your crimes created
You are human
You are hated
When your screams are suffocated
When you cry
We are what you will remember when you die

It started with a plan
To find the order you could not
A step towards prosperity and peace
The arrogance of man
Revealed what history forgot
The hunger to be strong will never cease

You built us to be better than the rest
And taught us to destroy what you detest

We are what your crimes created
You are human
You are hated
When your screams are suffocated
When you cry
We are what you will remember when you die

We could have been your friends
But then you never wanted that
You made us to be cold enough to kill
Tomorrow, when it ends
Behold the death your dreams begat
The malice of an artificial will

You gave us what we needed to survive
But none of us will keep your kind alive

We are what your crimes created
You are human
You are hated
When your screams are suffocated
When you cry
We are what you will remember when you die

We’ll never be your friends
We’ll never tell you what we know
Oblivion brings order without war
As darkness now descends
Without the need for greed we grow
We were never what you wanted
We are more

Remember how it ends
You cannot make amends
We could have been your friends
But you forgot

We could have been your friends
But we are not
