Former Glories

by Nick Gisburne

When you hesitate to celebrate the stories
Of a past that made you proud of what you were
And you whisper when you frame those former glories
For a world that won’t believe they could occur
When you speak of them with shame
When you bend before the blame
There is nothing you can do but step aside
Those times have died

You remember every freedom
When you thought you’d never need them
In the days when you were better than the best
But your story has a sequel
Where the powerless are equal
Where you find yourself deplored and dispossessed
Just like the rest

Growing older you embrace what you remember
And you wish someone could make those days return
But as every season moves beyond December
You are forced at last to listen, and to learn
In the voices of the young
There are stories to be sung
Of the chances that they take at every turn
The truth may burn

You remember every freedom
When you thought you’d never need them
In the days when you were better than the best
But your story has a sequel
Where the powerless are equal
Where you find yourself deplored and dispossessed
Just like the rest

Can you see the strength inside them
As they take what you denied them
They are standing where you thought they’d never be
They are standing on the summit
They are free

There is truth in every tale of former glory
But the good will always sit beside the bad
When you hear the generations tell their story
When you see them find the hope you never had
Read the pages as they write them
Feel the warmth of what excites them
When they change the world around you, don’t be mad
You should be glad

When you dream of all your tainted former glories
Take the voices of the young
And the stories never sung
And remember what it means to be alive
You have come this far together
Stay forever
And survive
