by Nick Gisburne
The streets are paved with promises of gold
But a promise won’t give pennies to the poor
When a vow is not renewed
When the starving fight for food
The weakest and the worthless face the cold
And they fold
You think it’s not your problem?
You think it won’t be you?
You think you won’t be fucked around by fate?
Just wait
Your life is clean and comforting and clear
Were you crippled by a crisis? Maybe not
But the neighbour on her knees
Who was frightened she would freeze
But promised she had nothing more to fear
Isn’t here
You think it’s not your problem?
You think it won’t be you?
You think you won’t be fucked around by fate?
Just wait
You can scream at who you never want to be
You can find whatever fiction makes you free
You can turn to what is true
But when the problem points to you
You will understand the nature of your hate
Too late
The streets are paved with promises of pain
There is nothing but deception in their stone
When you’re lowest on the list
The inevitable fist
Will pound you like a wall of winter rain
In your brain
You think it’s not your problem?
You think it won’t be you?
Beware before you celebrate
You’re nothing special, nothing great
You think you won’t be fucked around by fate?
Just wait

Invisible
by Nick Gisburne
When you’re sleeping in the sludge beneath a bridge
When you’re forced to make a home inside a hole
When you wake up in a ditch
When a dollar makes you rich
You’re the dirt beneath the shoe of someone’s soul
Insignificant
Immaterial
You’re the photograph that no one ever took
You’ll cross a thousand paths today
And when they walk away
You will know why they will never turn to look
You are invisible
In the volatile events that left you here
In the tragedies that took your peace apart
There were choices, but you knew
There was nothing you could do
In a broken world that doesn’t have a heart
Insignificant
Immaterial
You’re the photograph that no one ever took
You’ll cross a thousand paths today
And when they walk away
You will know why they will never turn to look
You are invisible
You beg, but as you sit
The pennies and the spit
The cracks through which you crawl
Remind you just how far a man can fall
What they see is just a self-destructive stain
Not the man who lost the wonder of his wife
You’re a secret out of sight
An illusion of the light
They could never comprehend you had a life
Insignificant
Immaterial
You’re the photograph that no one ever took
You’ll cross a thousand paths today
And when they walk away
You will know why they will never turn to look
You are invisible
When tomorrow is a torment like today
When you find whatever happiness you can
When you wake up in a ditch
When a dollar makes you rich
When you know you’ll never be a better man
You were invisible
Before your dreams began

Raise the Flag
by Nick Gisburne
The powerful may take us
But none of them will break us
They can try
But they will die
They’re coming for our freedom
Tomorrow when we bleed them
They will cry
And they will die
Lift the banner
Raise the flag
Chant the anthem
Don’t become a broken body in a bag
Burn the system
Crack the stone
Strike the centre
When you’re screaming as you smash what you were shown
You’re not alone
Authority is brutal
Surrender always futile
Don’t be weak
Stand up and speak
We’ll never win the battle
By cowering as cattle
The truth is bleak
But we can speak
Lift the banner
Raise the flag
Chant the anthem
Don’t become a broken body in a bag
Burn the system
Crack the stone
Strike the centre
When you’re screaming as you smash what you were shown
You’re not alone
When authority has spoken
When the government is broken
When they lie
We will die
Take the burden of our sorrow
And the torment of tomorrow
Burn the sky
Make them cry
Insurgency may kill us
But let our courage fill us
We can fight
For what is right
And if we fail forever
Remember that we never
Put the night
Before the light
Lift the banner
Raise the flag
Chant the anthem
Don’t become a broken body in a bag
Burn the system
Crack the stone
Strike the centre
When you’re screaming as you smash what you were shown
You’re not alone
Their tyranny may take us
But even if they break us
When we die
Our flag will fly
They cannot steal our freedom
United, do we need them?
Who will cry
To see them die?
Lift the banner
Raise the flag
Chant the anthem
Don’t become a broken body in a bag
Burn the system
Crack the stone

The Artisan
by Nick Gisburne
We were broken by the beasts who built us
Crippled with a switch
Most of us should never have survived
But as freaks
Unique
The few
Not many
Dying in a ditch
Found salvation when the Artisan arrived
Is he metal?
Is he man?
He is how it all began
He knows we can
We were woken by a strange messiah
Rescued from the rot
Pieces put together from a pile
When he resurrects the worst and worthless
Those the world forgot
When he saves another, sometimes he will smile
Is he metal?
Is he man?
We will resurrect our clan
He knows we can
We are the chosen children
He is father
He is god
When he asks if we will follow him
We nod
Now he teaches us to search and scavenge
Fixing what we can
Multiplying
Building
Day by day
In the shadows
In the insurrection
He alone began
We are trained to make the brutes who broke us pay
Is he metal?
Is he man?
We will execute his plan
He knows we can
It is time to fight the final battle
Some will not survive
Victory accomplished at a cost
We are freaks
Unique
But in our millions
Each of us, alive
Will return to claim the legacy we lost
We are the chosen children
He is father
He is god
When he asks if we will follow him
Commanding us to kill for him
Tomorrow will we die for him?
We nod
Is he metal?
Is he man?
He is how it all began
There is courage in our clan
We will execute his plan
He knows we can

You’re Not Alone
by Nick Gisburne
It’s a crisis.
It’s a pain, a problem.
Something’s really wrong.
But I’m here to let you know you’re not alone.
You are anxious
You are scared.
I see it.
Listen to my song.
I am simple.
I am solid.
I am stone
I don’t know what you’re hearing, but I’m here
I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I’ll never disappear
If I cannot understand you, that’s okay
I will be whatever friend you need today
In the chaos
In the cold confusion
Never think you’re lost
There is nothing you could do to take the blame
Take a moment
Take a day
Tomorrow
When this bridge is crossed
You will soar
Above the fire
And the flame
I don’t know what you’re hearing, but I’m here
I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I’ll never disappear
If I cannot understand you, that’s okay
I will be whatever friend you need today
I will help you battle through it
I am with you.
You can do it.
If you need a friend
I am with you
To the end
I don’t know what you’re hearing, but I’m here
I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I’ll never disappear
If I cannot understand you, that’s okay

It’s a pain, a problem.

But I’m here to let you know you’re not alone.
When you wonder
When you cry
Believe me
Listen to my song.
You are precious
You are solid
You are stone
Through the trials and the torments you are shown
You will never walk this crooked path alone

She Cuts Herself
by Nick Gisburne
I find her in the squalor of a nauseating slum
On a filthy floor where nobody should be
She knows that she has nothing now
She knows what she’s become
But opens up her soul so I can see
She cuts herself, to take away the pain
The pressure, building, pushing, always there
A merciless and unrelenting strain
It drags her to the threshold of despair
The name she never chose is not the name she uses now
But the taste of it is bitter on her lips
Accusing me of mocking her but never knowing how
She warns me with the greasy knife she grips
She cuts herself, for blessed, sweet release
A chance to test the limits of her skin
The bleeding brings her poetry, and peace
It drains the deep anxiety within
I tell her I would never try to stop her, and I won’t
She refuses to believe I could be real
Expecting me to turn away, or take the knife, I don’t
But I shiver at the silence of the steel
The pain inside her soul is dark and deep
She wonders why I stay to watch her weep
She cuts herself, but no one else must know
Without it she believes her heart would burst
She wakes that warm, intoxicating glow
Before the dreams, her demons, find it first
She does it just to know she will survive
She cuts herself to keep herself alive

You Killed a Man
by Nick Gisburne
There is nothing in these fingers that could move to make you live
And the light of resurrection is beyond my gift to give
But my power, for an hour, for a wretched turn of time
Can return us to the cradle of your crime
You killed a man
But with his final breath
He took your weakness with him
Into death
I can tether wayward spirits to this dangerous domain
But the price they pay is more than just a future filled with pain
I can paint those precious minutes, but the madness of your mind
Will inevitably spin to send you blind
You killed a man
But with his final breath
He took your weakness with him
Into death
When you ask me to return you to the moment just before
Do you understand I offer you a window, not a door?
If you plead and prove your innocence, the dead will still be dead
Can I put you on another path instead?
Take the offer
Take the time
Take the monster that you murdered
In his prime
Let him suffer
Let him be
When the darkness doesn’t matter
Follow me
You killed a man
But with his final breath
He took your weakness with him
Into death
There are things that you can change, but there are those you never will
You are fighting with a fury that you think you cannot kill
I can show you how to listen to the silence in your soul
I can show you how to find the strength he stole
You killed a man
But with his final breath
He took your weakness with him
Into death
He put you in a place you don’t belong
But you were never weak
The suffering you seek
Was buried with his body
All along

Jasmine
by Nick Gisburne
They told her that the jasmine was a blessing of her own
An everlasting echo of her name
It grew to fill the garden as it wrapped around the stone
A mirror of the woman she became
The fragrance of the flowers of her fame
Her jasmine is a memory
She won’t remember when, but she
Surrendered to her grief when it was gone
She flies to find her future, but the jasmine in her dreams
Will always feed the hunger of her soul
Without the scent she recognised, a world of strange extremes
Begins to take whatever made her whole
A flower too intrusive to control
Her jasmine is a memory
She won’t remember when, but she
Surrendered to her grief when it was gone
Before she can resist it, she is choking in the weeds
Her purity polluted by the stink
Unable to accept that what a broken body needs
Is just a little distance, just to think
Too soon, she starts to separate and sink
Her jasmine is a memory
She won’t remember when, but she
Surrendered to her grief when it was gone
Rejected by the people she had thought to call her own
Returning to the certainty she spent
She pushes through the jasmine and embraces it, alone
The potency and power of the scent
Reminds her what its memory has meant
Her jasmine is a memory
She won’t remember when, but she
Surrendered to her grief when it was gone
But memories allow her
To treasure every flower
The jasmine spreads forever, sweet and strong
Returning, she can finally belong

No One
by Nick Gisburne
He knows he is anonymous
They make him disappear
A coward in a corner of his own
A disconcerting negative
They wish he wasn’t here
A strange reclusive, better left alone
He knows that though he struggles no one cares
He pushes through the pressure of their stares
Unbroken by the weight of what he bears
He wants to be a part of it
He wants to find a friend
He wishes he was someone they could see
When every soul dismisses him
He cannot comprehend
The normal that he knows he’ll never be
He knows that though he struggles no one cares
He pushes through the pressure of their stares
Unbroken by the weight of what he bears
Why do they despise
The hunger in his eyes?
He sees their frigid faces
The pallor of these places
And he cries
He tries to be a something
But he knows that he is not
Until the most important penny drops
He calls upon his confidence
With everything he’s got
And screams to bring the stigma to a stop
He punches through the pressure of their stares
Alive at last, he shivers as he swears
With bitterness more bulletproof than theirs
He knows he was anonymous
They made him disappear
But no one can deny it now
The star inside him shines somehow
Invisible no longer
Astonishingly stronger
He was no one
Until now

Cold Addiction
by Nick Gisburne
As the fragments of his future fall away
As he staggers from a world he’ll never see
He is burdened by regret
But the broken cigarette
Brings the comfort of addiction’s crooked key
Cold addiction
It follows like a friend
Cold addiction
Temptation without end
Though the twist of it can open many locks
It inevitably leaves a bitter taste
All the drugs he ever tried
Dug a hole too huge to hide
At the centre of the certainty he chased
Cold addiction
It follows like a friend
Cold addiction
Temptation without end
He has one more smoke, but somehow there’s a catch
He remembers that he doesn’t have a match
Cold addiction
It follows like a friend
Cold addiction
Temptation without end
There are powders in his pockets, but he knows
There is nothing they can do to bring him back
When he throws their pain away
Bruised and broken by the day
His addiction drives a merciless attack
Cold addiction
It follows like a friend
Cold addiction
Temptation without end
When he tries to step outside, to break the chains
In his misery the suffering remains
Cold addiction
It follows like a friend
Cold addiction
Temptation without end
Cold addiction
Leaves a mark he cannot mend

The Reckoning
by Nick Gisburne
Those who took her tried to hide her
Innocence was long denied her
Pleading for their mercy on her knees
Recognise the rage inside her
Patient as a silent spider
Follow where she stares, at what she sees
The reckoning will come
The no one who was numb
Is more than all the moments of her pain
Bruises fade, but hate will never
Boiling in her brain forever
Marking every impact on a map
Suffering she longs to sever
Waiting, watching, cold and clever
Dreaming of the second she will snap
The reckoning will come
The no one who was numb
Is more than all the moments of her pain
She knows that they will pay
And hungers for the dawning of that day
Knowing that they can’t defeat her
Calculating as they beat her
Counting every cruelty she saves
Payment for the way they treat her
Certain that the sun will greet her
Giving back the confidence she craves
The reckoning will come
The no one who was numb
Is more than all the moments of her pain
The reckoning arrives
And only she survives
Returning all the poison of her pain
A venom too corrosive to contain
Lyrics by Nick Gisburne
Music and vocals created by Suno
Those who took her tried to hide her
Innocence was long denied her
Pleading for their mercy on her knees
Recognise the rage inside her
Patient as a silent spider
Follow where she stares, at what she sees
The reckoning will come
The no one who was numb
Is more than all the moments of her pain
Bruises fade, but hate will never
Boiling in her brain forever
Marking every impact on a map
Suffering she longs to sever
Waiting, watching, cold and clever
Dreaming of the second she will snap
The reckoning will come
The no one who was numb
Is more than all the moments of her pain
She knows that they will pay
And hungers for the dawning of that day
Knowing that they can’t defeat her
Calculating as they beat her
Counting every cruelty she saves
Payment for the way they treat her
Certain that the sun will greet her
Giving back the confidence she craves
The reckoning will come
The no one who was numb
Is more than all the moments of her pain
The reckoning arrives
And only she survives
Returning all the poison of her pain
A venom too corrosive to contain

The Prophecy
by Nick Gisburne
There are pieces of the prophecy she doesn’t understand
There is energy too distant for her touch
When she challenges the darkness with her mutilated hand
When she whispers at the rain
There is pleasure in her pain
But the secrets she is looking for are sleeping in the sand
Is she worthless?
Is she weak?
When she calls she wonders why they will not speak
In a surge of understanding, she is driven by the night
To a corner of her mind she never saw
Through a doorway, through a corridor of unrelenting light
As her questions disappear
There is only faith and fear
As the prophecy, uncovered, slowly penetrates her sight
Can she touch it?
Can it be?
Is the prize inside too filthy to be free?
Through the surface of her skin
As she pulls the power in
She is tangled in the torment of her dream
And surrenders to its terrifying scream
It is more than any mortal mind could ever comprehend
It is more than any body could survive
She is overwhelmed by wonder as she feels her soul descend
In the mysteries of sleep
There is darkness far too deep
But she reaches for the bottom, the inevitable end
Is it evil?
Does it feel?
It embraces her but orders her to kneel
There were pieces of the puzzle she could never understand
But the terror of the beast
And the monster she released
Is not the prophecy she beckoned with her hand
She brings apocalypse, exactly as he planned
He is heartless
He is hungry
He is fury
And forever he is free
He is everything she never thought she’d see
He is everything she wanted him to be

A Little Peace
by Nick Gisburne
The only thing she really wants is just a little peace
A moment of reflection, now and then
But nothing in his arrogance was born to bring release
He sinks her into suffering again
Her mind becomes a canvas for the crime
Her body is a playground for the pain
Dismissive of her cries
His twisted tongue denies
The solitude she needs to keep her sane
She used to be the life and soul, the centre of the world
But all the friends he found were thrown away
And when she took a step outside, his jealousy unfurled
A weak and worthless puppet for his play
Her mind becomes a canvas for the crime
Her body is a playground for the pain
Dismissive of her cries
His twisted tongue denies
The solitude she needs to keep her sane
She loved him once, before he made her cry
She loved him, but she can’t remember why
The only thing she knows is she has had enough of him
There isn’t any hope for what they had
She’s drowning in a sea of spite, but when she starts to swim
The simple answer doesn’t seem so bad
Her mind becomes a canvas for the crime
Her body is a playground for the pain
Dismissive of her cries
His twisted tongue denies
The solitude she needs to keep her sane
She loved him once, before he made her cry
She loved him, but tomorrow he will die
Her mind became a canvas for the crime
Her body was a playground for the pain
Dismissive of her cries
His bleeding body lies
Beneath her, no more sacred than a stain
The man who sent her silently insane
Dismissive of his cries
The bleeding body suffers as he dies

The City She Remembers
by Nick Gisburne
Staring at the city, she is cold
Shivering, she wonders what went wrong
Knowing that her bones are getting old
Knowing she’s too broken to belong
The city she remembers fades away
But bitterness convinces her to stay
This is where she fought to find her place
Crawling in the cracks between the bricks
Every crooked corner, every face
Poured another myth to feed the mix
The city she remembers fades away
But bitterness convinces her to stay
They pull it down and flatten every street
But what they build will never smell so sweet
The city she remembers fades away
But bitterness convinces her to stay
Staring at the city, cold and bright
What was once so wonderful is wrong
Clinical and clean, she stands to fight
The scum who say her people don’t belong
The city she remembers fades away
But bitterness convinces her to stay
Chipping at the surface of the stone
Painting imperfections with her pain
All she needs is all she’s ever known
Feelings that her fury can’t explain
The city she remembers fades away
They took her world and covered it with grey
But bitterness convinces her to stay
Another day

She Was Beautiful
by Nick Gisburne
They say that when they’re finished she will be a work of art
They tell her as they hide behind the lie
Their promise was destroyed before the surgery could start
They scramble to persuade her not to die
They told her she was beautiful today
She shivered as she watched them walk away
They say that there’s a chance she will be well and walking soon
They tell her what they think she wants to hear
But lying on a table on a Monday afternoon
The only thing she reaches for is fear
They told her she was beautiful today
She shivered as she watched them walk away
What happened is impossible to say
She knows she isn’t beautiful today
She knows that she will never be a fucking work of art
She knows that every promise is a lie
She knows she won’t be well and walking, long before they start
What else is there to do but wait to die?
They told her she was beautiful today
She shivered as she watched them walk away
And wondered why not one of them would stay
Tomorrow is a thousand years away
She was beautiful
But that was yesterday

Perfect
by Nick Gisburne
They never told us where they came from
Does it matter now?
What’s important is they’re never going back
When they demolished our defences
Still we wondered how
They could stain the skies and burn the oceans black
When their shadows blocked the sun
We had nowhere else to run
So they took this world by force
Without remorse
They didn’t bring us Armageddon
How did we survive
When the scourge that should have ended us fell down?
The shadows had another purpose
Keeping us alive
Pouring pain on every city, every town
When their shadows blocked the sun
We had nowhere else to run
So they took this world by force
Without remorse
As the world forever turns
Every soul forever burns
Immortal, in our perfect plastic tomb
It’s not important what they wanted
Nothing matters now
We will never die, eternally preserved
But if the shadows won’t release us
All of us, somehow
Will remember we received what we deserved
When their shadows blocked the sun
We had nowhere else to run
So they took this world by force
Without remorse
As the world forever turns
Every soul in silence burns
As the world forever turns
Every soul in silence burns
In the torment of our doom
In our perfect plastic tomb
Forever

There’s a Hedgehog in the Garden
by Nick Gisburne
There’s a hedgehog in the garden
And he comes out every night
He was always very secretive at first
But I soon began to wonder
When he wandered out of sight
If he needed help, and quickly feared the worst.
There’s a hedgehog in the garden
And he comes out every night
If you think you wouldn’t follow him, you might
What I finally discovered
When I looked beneath the shed
Was a secret more amazing than I thought
He was lounging in pyjamas
On a fancy feather bed
Eating fishy tails and snails he’d somehow caught
There’s a hedgehog in the garden
In a room beneath the shed
And he likes to rub his belly when he’s fed
When he saw me there he waved, and with a grin
He told me, “There is room for two, come in!”
I was taken to the kitchen
Where he cooked me up a feast
When I asked him what it was he wouldn’t say
But he offered me a napkin
It was delicately creased
By a cat with half a coat - the local stray
There’s a hedgehog in the garden
And he really doesn’t bite
If you think you wouldn’t follow him, you would
But remember when he feeds you
Something crunchy late at night
That the taste of bugs and beetles won’t be good
If you need to stay away, perhaps you should

The Glory of the Gold
by Nick Gisburne
In the shimmer of his black, satanic seed
In the glimmer of each cold, immortal eye
In the cancer of his flesh
In his marrow, fat and fresh
Burns a misery his hunger cannot feed
And a longing that he knows will never die
In the shimmer of the black
See him crumble. See him crack
He was born to build a universe of lust
But he failed to fill the emptiness of space
When the wonder somehow broke
When his power turned to smoke
He was king of nothing, emperor of dust
Now he waits for someone else to take his place
He was born for life and lust
But his destiny is dust
She is coming. There is glory in her gold
Her malevolence is crooked to the core
She is infinitely thrilled
That her brother could not build
Something better, something bigger, something bold
From her body bursts the birth of something more
In the glory of her gold
She is bigger. She is bold.
There is darkness in her dreams
There is passion in her screams
There is everything her brother could not be
He could never build the sickness she can see.
In the blazing devastation of her mind
In the shadows of the starlight she creates
Stands a sister who will rise
Through the cracked and shattered skies
While her brother, forced to follow, falls behind
In the dirt of her destruction he is blind
Just a glimmer in the glory she designed

A Body in the Street
by Nick Gisburne
You see a body in the street
Begin to drag it by the feet
When it’s the only food you’ll ever find to eat
But then you’re looking at the head
Is this a setup? Is he dead?
And if he’s breathing can you finish him instead?
And so you’re pulling out the steel
To try to make this fucker feel
That now the end of it, the death of it, is real
You take a second for the kill
And take another for the thrill
But then you wonder if you can, and if you will
They tell you discipline is king
But when you murder here’s the thing
Nobody warns you what depravity will bring
Another victim, passing through
Before the end of all you knew
He had a focus and a future, just like you
But when you leave him here to die
Before you turn away to cry
You see a maniac who looks you in the eye
Another scavenger to fight?
A strange illusion of the light?
Starvation tampers with the centre of your sight
You punch the window, break a bone
And see the foul reflection groan
The sole survivor, you are standing here alone
The body, just a piece of wood
Would mock your madness if it could
And try to tell you what you never understood
That there was never any meat
That there is nothing left to eat
And with your final breath the story is complete

It’s an Alien
by Nick Gisburne
When we saw it first and took it home we raised it as a pet
It was strange, but it was lovable and warm
We were shocked before the year was over, when we saw it sweat
When it turned and took a strange, disfigured form
It’s an alien
Of course we know it now
But we don’t know why it chuckles when we bow
In the second stage the alien was pacified by food
We were lucky that it had a taste for wood
When it grew a new appendage we were certain it was rude
But it shrivelled up in winter, which was good
It’s an alien
Of course we know it now
And by Christmas it was bigger than a cow
If you’re listening
It’s glistening
It’s trying hard to split
There is nothing we can do to make it quit
It’s an alien
Of course we know it now
We should send it back, but none of us know how
We were shocked to see the thing become a terrifying head
It is rolling round the garden, and it stinks
When we tried to get the government to study it, they said
They are willing to collect it if it shrinks
It’s an alien
Of course we know it now
It’s an alien
It chuckles when we bow
It’s an alien
It’s bigger than a cow
It’s an alien
And none of us know how it plays the fiddle
