Something New

by Nick Gisburne

They leave her soul to crumble in a corner
Abandoning her sanity to rot
She shudders when she sees the men who scorn her
When they force her to be someone she is not
She remembers all the freedoms they forgot

They manipulate their faith to bind and blind her
With the punishments they say their god assigned her
She is drained by what they do
But inside her something new
Lights a candle when she shivers in the night
And its flicker gives her just enough to fight

The menace of uncompromising madness
The propaganda driven down her throat
A creed conceived to smother her with sadness
She is poisoned by the prejudice they quote
From the book of broken dreams their schemes promote

They manipulate their faith to bind and blind her
With the punishments they say their god assigned her
She is drained by what they do
But inside her something new
Lights a candle when she shivers in the night
And its flicker gives her just enough to fight

As a tiny seed of strength begins to grow
In the ashes of her pain
In the heart they try to train
She is sheltered by a truth they’ll never know

The victim of a twisted congregation
Escaping from the clutches of its curse
She vows revenge for every violation
Though the damage is too brutal to reverse
But to let them win would only make it worse

She obliterates their faith to bind and blind them
With a punishment her bitterness assigned them
She was empty but she grew
In her soul is something new
She is burning with a flame they cannot fight
But she spares them and they vanish in the night

In the cinders of her spite
She remembers what is right
As the dawn dissolves the dark
She begins to feed the spark
Of something new
