The Beauty of a Lie

The Beauty of a Lie
by Nick Gisburne

The balance of our government began to break apart
When liars, thieves and traitors took their seats
Abandoning their promises, the change could swiftly start
We watched them put their soldiers on the streets
And understood the depth of our defeats

Too gullible to know what we were getting
We chose a change we found ourselves regretting
When we saw the system choke
In the shadows of their smoke
We were blinded by the beauty of a lie
In a system we were quick to let them buy

So many strays and strangers could be criminals, they said
That something had to crack to catch the worst
But counting all the killings as the fear began to spread
We listened to the speeches they rehearsed
Convinced that every one of us was cursed

Too gullible to know what we were getting
We chose a change we found ourselves regretting
When we saw the system choke
In the shadows of their smoke
We were blinded by the beauty of a lie
In a system we were quick to let them buy

The dangers of a brutal system broken by the few
Are clearer when the killers come for you

When all their plans and politics were written in a book
They knew that not enough of us would learn
We should have seen it coming but we never thought to look
Awakened at the point of no return
Our stolen freedoms blister as they burn

Too gullible to know what we were getting
We chose a change we found ourselves regretting
When we saw the system choke
In the shadows of their smoke
We were blinded by the beauty of a lie
In a system we were quick to let them buy

They told us we had never seen a golden age so great
They promised peace and plenty unsurpassed
But change became the paralysing poison of their hate
They took apart the world we built to last
And stained it with the ashes of the past

We were blinded by the beauty of a lie
In a system where the best of us will die
