Dreams and Screams
Dreams and Screams
by Nick Gisburne
Every tunnel in his twisted mind is littered with debris
All the broken thoughts he never gives away
Though he polishes the pieces, what the perfect people see
When they find his face disfiguring their day
Is a soul too sick to spare their precious time
When he begs them for a dollar or a dime
In the darkness of his eyes are dreams and screams they’ll never know
There is more than they can see or understand
In the crazy days of summer or the winter’s frozen snow
In the prison of a pain he never planned
He reaches for redemption with a strong and hopeful hand
In the ashes of the long-forgotten man he used to be
Burns a tiny flame determined not to die
He could end it all tomorrow but refuses to be free
When he wakes he finds another reason why
There is nothing in the emptiness of death
So he fights for every slow and shallow breath
In the darkness of his eyes are dreams and screams they’ll never know
There is more than they can see or understand
In the crazy days of summer or the winter’s frozen snow
In the prison of a pain he never planned
He reaches for redemption with a strong and hopeful hand
He knows they won’t remember when they pass him in the street
But his tortured soul will never let his mind admit defeat
When the lines between illusion and reality are blurred
When he wanders through a world they’ve never seen
There are moments when he profits from the kindness of a word
But their sympathies are few and far between
Every morning he returns to face the spite
In a battle he was never born to fight
In the darkness of his eyes are dreams and screams they’ll never know
There is more than they can see or understand
In the crazy days of summer or the winter’s frozen snow
In the prison of a pain he never planned
He reaches for redemption with a strong and hopeful hand
In the darkness of his eyes are dreams and screams you’ll never know
Spare a moment or a minute when you see him in the sunshine or the snow
