Toil and Time

by Nick Gisburne

Applaud the touch, the movement of a hand,
Perfection only given to the greats.
Look harder, closer. Try to understand,
Success is not a favour from the Fates.
The root of art, of excellence, is work,
The grim, relentless grind of toil and time,
A burden you can never shake or shirk.
No slacker ever scaled a mountain. Climb.
Today, do something, somehow, good or bad.
Tomorrow, try, improve, again, again.
For every fault or flaw, be brave, be glad
You walk beyond the bounds of lesser men.
Ambition without work will never win.
To make your mark, to shine, to soar, begin.
