Violent Night

by Nick Gisburne

The scene of yet another vicious crime
Torments her soul and wrestles with its peace
A mutilated carpenter this time
Officials, clueless, sanction her release
Her bruises, self-inflicted, sell the lie
The man came out of nowhere, with an axe
A pregnant woman, ambushed. Who knows why?
In cities there are many such attacks
She pats her swollen belly, walks away
Assured that self-defence refutes her blame
She struggles now to find a place to stay
And sleeps inside a stable with her shame
When Mary killed her worthless husband, Joe
She never dreamed how well her plan would go
